Intermediate Jumps
for our athletes
Side Swing to Jump
The Sideswing Jump is a fairly easy move that alternates from Sideswing to jumping at every rotation. Do a few to the left and a few to the right. If you have dominated the Sideswing transition to Running Jump, then this one is easy to do.
You can also do this one transitioning to the Bounce Jump rather than the Running Jump.
High Step
The High Step is easy to do if you can do the Running Jump. That's all it is, except you have to raise your knees to waist level.
Give it a go!
Side Straddle
The Side Straddle is almost like a jumping jack.
Start with the Bounce Jump and alternating jumps spreading legs to shoulder width and back together.
Twist Straddle
The Twist Straddle is similar to the above, and should be easy when you can easily do the Bounce Jump. Twist your lower part of your body on ever jump.
Bell Jump
As on the previous ones, the Bell Jump is also based on the Bounce Jump, but you jump forward and backward on each jump. Keep your balance so you stay in the same place during jumping.
Ski Jump
The Ski Jump is based on the same principles as above, and should be easy once you master the Bounce Jump. Try not to jump too far. A simple hop to the sides while keeping your rhythm is all that's needed.
Boxer Jump
The Boxer Jump is similar to the Running Jump, but try to keep your legs straight and forward. It is quite simple, but builds on your available tricks when jumping for fitness.
Butt Kicks
The Butt Kick is the opposite as the Boxer Jump. You simply push your feet back and try to get them high behind you. This is easier than the Boxer obviously because your knees flex in that direction.
Tippy Toes
The Tippy Toes Jump takes multiple revolutions to complete. You touch the tip of your foot and then the heal of your foot before doing the other leg. In this example I'm actually doing tip, heel, tip before switching legs. Remember that there are no strict rules. Just go for it!
Hand-Under
The Hand-Under is not really a jump, but it takes some rhythm to hand over the rope to your other hand smoothly. Remember to pass it from side to side every revolution.
Cross Over
The Cross Over is easy once you get the timing of it. Remember that it alternates between a normal jump and a cross position. Watch the movement on the video and practice without a rope first, getting the rhythm down before trying it with the rope.
This is a fun one…
The Rockette
The Rockette is a name that my daughter came up with (wonder why?). It's a High Step and a Boxer Jump, one after another, so it should be easy once you have practiced those two. This one also seems to become easy when listening to good music.
Continuous Cross
The Continuous Cross is like the Cross Over, but you stay in the cross position, with your hands in opposite sides. Make sure you use your wrists, as beginners tend to overwork the back when trying to get a good rope rotation.
Running Cross
The Running Cross is the same as the Cross Over, but you run, or alternate legs, instead of keeping your legs together. Some people find it easier than the regular Cross Over because it takes less effort when you don't jump too high, and do it smoothly.
